Anonymous asked: where are you interning this summer? also, you clearly are applying to work at for-profit companies, yet you seem like someone who cares about many nonprofit-type causes. can you explain your reasoning behind wanting to work for for-profit firms?
i don’t know where i’m interning yet. you don’t usually hear back until like, mid march i think.
i mostly applied to editorial internships at various publications. right now, i’m really interested in the idea of media ownership and how that controls prevailing narratives on current events/popular culutre. i.e. how the people/groups that control the news we read play a part in affecting what we regard as truth.
also, i really like writing.
i thought that this sort of job would be the best realm for me to be in in order to explore these ideas.
i love nonprofits, and will donate to them, support them, and be involved in a hobby capacity for as long as i live, but i think nonprofit work would be really disheartening for me personally. a lot of nonprofit work is dealing with bureaucracy and i think i’d get frustrated with not being able to affect structural change. that’s just a personal hangup though, not something everyone will or should believe.
